How Kids Can Start a YouTube Channel!

It’s easier than ever to get into content creation. There are an immense plethora of online resources, including classes, videos, blogs, and much more. So much of it is even free! Kids these days are always looking to get their fifteen minutes of fame, have fun with friends, and dig their teeth into something they are passionate about. This is where a YouTube channel comes in. A YouTube channel will allow a child to combine their passions, get their friends involved, learn new skills, and who knows? They might even become a huge content creator one day! It can seem a bit daunting, though, to get a kid started on YouTube. And you might be thinking, why would I want to do that? And how would I do that? Well, don’t wonder anymore! I will break some things down that will help it all make sense.

Why Start a YouTube Channel?

There is a multitude of reasons to start a YouTube channel for kids. In fact, I’ve dedicated a whole other blog post dedicated to this topic. You can read that HERE! But just in the interest of time, I’ll briefly summarize a few of the key points. Kids will gain essential technical skills and life skills that will help them throughout their careers. Some examples include editing, script writing, filming, fortitude, and learning how to be entertaining!

How to Begin

The first step is to determine what kind of content the child wants to create. To do this, make a list with them of all of their passions and interests. What do they enjoy doing? What would they want to learn more about? The more they enjoy the subject, the easier it will be to keep working on it. Once they have a list of interests, take a look at it with them and try to figure out how some of them could combine. This will allow them to develop a niche for themselves. For example, if they enjoy cooking and teaching, they could start a channel where they teach other kids how to cook. Or, if they have fun playing video games and also like to watch Soccer on TV, they could start a gaming channel focused on FIFA. I hope you get the idea.

Creating a niche is super important for success on YouTube. As there are literally millions of channels, finding something that allows your kid to stand out is critical!

Tools

You don’t need to spend any money to have some of the best tools to work with! The beauty of modern technology is that it is more accessible than ever to create high-quality content! Kids don’t need to spend countless hours and boatloads of money to make excellent videos. For starters, you don’t need a 4K High Definition $3000 Camera to record; all you need is a smartphone or tablet with some basic filming capabilities. If your kid doesn’t own one, let them borrow yours at certain times for their recording or even help them make videos!

As far as editing software goes, again, it doesn’t need to be crazy. There are plenty of free programs you can find online. Just google Free Video Editing Software, and you’ll find droves of programs you can get started on right away. Some great ones are “OpenShot” and “Filmora .”The latter will have a watermark but to upgrade is surprisingly affordable!

Want to create amazing thumbnails? Use “Canva .”Another free program that lets you design stunning graphics. It’s super intuitive and easy to use. Your child will be on their way in no time!

I hope this has all helped you realize that starting a YouTube channel doesn’t have to be complicated, expensive, and a daunting task. By using some free software, a family tablet, and figuring out a niche, kids can learn all sorts of important and critical skills for the future! And if they need any help with learning filming techniques, YouTube SEO, and more, check out our 1-on-1 in-person or online learning sessions HERE!

Until next time,

To begin with, I advise you to decide on a video recording program (if it is, for example, gaming content). In my opinion, it works best https://www.movavi.com/support/how-to/how-to-record-screen-on-mac.html. It is a simple, user-friendly free and professional recording tool. With it the quality will be at its best.
